Perfectly Imperfect - Teaching Your Child Self Acceptance

Perfectly Imperfect - Teaching Your Child Self Acceptance

Today's world puts a lot of emphasis on popularity, and how it can set the tone for what's "acceptable." The truth is you can't please everyone, no matter how hard you try. Adults have already learned this lesson, but it's a hard one to relate to a child. Knowing what "normal" is can be tricky.

Girls, especially, seem to want as much approval as possible. Study on juvenile behavior has found that young girls are under increasing pressure in several areas. This is particularly noticeable in the way they emulate their popular celebrities, and follow trends. For instance, when young celebrities started wearing sophisticated headbands to red carpeting events, ordinary girls began doing the same, and all of a sudden, headbands became a fashion staple.

Baby Girl Headbands

According to Joyce M. Roche, President and Ceo of Girls Inc., an organization that encourages young women to reach their full potential, "society still sees girls straight through a gender lens that requires them to be pretty and passive, while increasingly expecting them to be smart and successful."

One study commissioned by her organization surveyed more than 2000 school aged girls and boys, and over 1000 adults. The results indicated that 71% of the girls wanted to go to college, but most did not know how to accomplish this dream. One-fifth of the respondents said they did not know an adult they could trust to help with a problem. Fully seventy-six percent of girls in grades 9 to 12 were overly involved about their appearance.

Another alarming trend is that girls in elementary school are worried about how to look skinny and how to "dress right." In fact, the study revealed that over half of the girls in grades 3 to 5 were dealing with these issues.

There is nothing wrong with a child wanting to look her best. Although self-esteem is rooted on what's inside, it's also true that how you look on the covering can help a lot. For instance, a minuscule thing like wearing fashionable hair accessories can be a way of expressing a salutary self image.

As parents, we can't all the time operate what happens to our children once they step out of the confines of home. Here are a few things you can do to help ease the pressures that many youngsters face. Girls Inc. Recommends:

Provide passage to a wide collection of baby gifts. Not just the "for girls only" kind - pick up some boy items, too. Dolls, dress-up clothes with matching hair clips, as well as trucks and chemistry sets. Make it clear to your child that it's okay to play with all of them.

Alleviate school pressure. Elementary school should be full of fun and exploration, as well as learning.

Avoid gender bias at home by distributing the household chores evenly. Make sure that everyone lends a hand.

Be a good role model and expose your child to good role models covering the extended family. You can introduce your children to adults across the vocation spectrum, to show that men and women serve many distinct and equally leading roles in society.

Hippie Headbands: A Hippie Fashion Trend

Hippie Headbands: A Hippie Fashion Trend

The 1960's gave rise to a hippie subculture which was originally a youth movement throughout the Us. Not only did it spread to other countries, but it has had resurgence in recent years for young and old alike. Such shows as That 70s Show are no doubt partially responsible, but the fashion industry has taken note, and we are finding hippie headbands, and fashion in any place these days.

Both men and women in the hippie movement wore jeans and maintained long hair, wore sandals or went barefoot. Men often grew beards and women refused to wear makeup and bras. They wore brightly colored clothes in unusual styles which included bell lowest jeans, vests, tie dyed clothes, dashikis, peasant skirts and blouses, and those famous hippie headbands which they adopted from the Native Americans. Additionally they adopted styles from Asian, Indian, African and Latin American cultures.

Hippies were known for wearing handcrafted clothing because their beliefs included defying corporate culture. Because of this they not only learned to make clothes; they bought them from flea markets and second hand shops.

Many may not know that the hippie scene categorically rose from the beatnik scene of the 1950s. The ideologies were originally the same as well as the values.

Hippie fashions and values wholly changed our culture, influencing music, television, literature and the arts as well as morals and religious beliefs. As you might imagine, tons of hippie clothes, ideals and other aspects of hippie culture have come to be part of our mainstream culture today. From church movements to cultural diversity, the concepts have been approved more and more over the last several decades.

The hippie music festivals is only one of the many celebratory ways we embrace the effects of the hippie culture in contemporary times.

At these festivals hippie symbols and iconography are in any place along with the peace sign which can be seen on peace clothing, tie dye clothing, hippie jewelry, other forms of hippie fashion, and even the occasional peace sign tattoos.

Girls are known to wear gypsy skirts, which are peasant skirts, or broomstick skirts, often tie dyed and hippie dresses of similar fashion. Hippie tapestries are often draped or cut and sewn into dashikis or dresses as well.

In singular there were a myriad designs of hippie headbands. These bohemian headbands were often braided out of leather or fabric of most any type. The chic headbands of the 1980s were a throwback to them, but the 60s headbands were not typically elastic like those of the 1980s. The fashion trend included the use of bandanas or a straightforward cord tied nearby the head in various styles. These boho headband accessories didn't have to match an outfit in particular, and therefore often had personal meaning or were worn as whether a statement or to commemorate something in many instances.

The sight of the hippie headband was a sure sign in the 60s that a hippie was in your presence. This often brought derision from those who withstood the morals of the hippie movement. Their hippie clothes and head wraps were then seen as the costumes of foolish youngsters. Now citizen want to know where they can find a hippie store!

The hippie bands at the festivals wear clothes and headbands often made more contemporary with some type of new fashion flair. The popular piercings add a new twist to the hippie look, as well as dreadlocks often sported by neo-hippies these days.

Fashion changes, but hippie headbands, fashion, clothes and music are here to stay!

Prom Hairstyle Ideas

Prom Hairstyle Ideas

Special events like prom call for special hairstyles. Spring is a sign of good things to come and one of those is a special night that every juvenile girl dreams of. That special night is prom and you want it to be the most unforgettable night in your life so far. Read on for some breathtaking hairstyle ideas to help make it a night to remember.

If you are a girl who likes vintage hairstyles and you are inspired by the feminine looks of days gone by, then you may reconsider a very feminine updo idea for long right hair. This hairstyle looks breathtaking with bangs and here is how.

Baby Girl Headbands

Take locks of hair on both sides of your head beginning at the temple. Roll the locks towards your head and back at the same time. While you are rolling join more locks of hair until you have added all of your hair. At the back of your head fold the hair up and collect it with bobby pins and then add a join of jeweled barrettes to terminate the look. The rolls of hair in the back should gently hang down a bit to just touch the bottom of your neck. There you have yourself a nice feminine look for prom.

A modern day look for your special event would include the use of some hair accessories and for this look we will be using a headband. This look is best with straightened long hair and it will be pulled back into a modern day ponytail. This look is great with or without bangs, but if you do have bangs, they look best if they are brushed to the side.

To get this great prom hairstyle, start with straightened hair and back comb the underneath layers in the back of the crown of the head. This will add height to the back and then gently comb the top layer of hair flat while pulling hair back into a low ponytail that is secured at the nape of the neck. Place a narrow headband that matches your dress high on the head. Now, using a headband that contrasts in color with your hair color will add more drama and proximity to your look.

Now, if you have short hair, you can also use a headband accessory to spice up your look. A bob hairstyle that is shorter in the back and longer in the front is a cute angled look that would look great with the expanding of a headband. You could experiment with wide and narrow headbands and separate colors as well until you find the look you are after.

For those with curly or wavy hair, you are right in style and you may want to accentuate your curls and waves. Start out by using a curl improving shampoo and conditioner. Blow dry hair using a diffuser and your hands to scrunch hair while you dry. You could pull back a join of locks of hair on both sides and collect them in the back for a romantic prom hairstyle.

Have fun searching for the right prom hairstyle for you and above all, have fun at your prom.
